The valence electrons are either lost to another atom or the sodium atom gains valence electrons, it really depends on if what the sodium atom is bonding with has a lot or a little of valence electrons. The structure doesn't change though, just the number of valence electrons change.

The nucleus is never changed when an ion is formed.

Using the element phosphorus as an example.. what is the equation for a process in which the energy change will correspond to the electron affinity?

The electron affinity of phosphorus can be represented by the process: P(g) + e- → P-(g). This equation shows the energy change associated with adding an electron to a phosphorus atom to form a phosphide ion.

What does not change when an ion forms?

The number of protons and neutrons does not change when an ion forms.

When radiation is absorbed by a hydrogen electron the hydrogen atom changes its ground state to?

When a hydrogen electron absorbs radiation, it moves to an excited state. The electron jumps to a higher energy level, causing the hydrogen atom to change its ground state to an excited state.

Which is easier to change the soil texture or structure?

It is generally easier to change the soil texture than the soil structure. Soil texture can be transformed through the addition of amendments like sand, silt, or clay. Soil structure, on the other hand, refers to how particles are arranged and bonded, making it more challenging to alter without time and proper soil management practices.

What happens when an atom gains or loses a neutron?

If this were to happen, which for most nuclei would be unbelievably unlikely, it would form a different isotope of the same element. I can't offhand think of any way a nucleus could gain or lose a neutron without something else happening at the same time. A neutron can change into a proton by emitting an electron (and an electron antineutrino), or a proton can absorb an electron and change into a neutron, but in both of these cases there's more going on than just the neutron number of the nucleus changing.

How will electron configuration of the atom change when the atom becomes an ion?

When an atom becomes an ion, it gains or loses electrons to achieve a full outer electron shell, resulting in a change in electron configuration. For example, a neutral sodium atom (1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1) loses one electron to become a sodium ion (1s2 2s2 2p6). The electron configuration of the ion reflects this change in the number of electrons.

How does the behavior of an electron change when it forms a covalent bond?

When an electron forms a covalent bond, it becomes shared between two atoms, leading to a more stable arrangement. This sharing of electrons can change the electron's behavior by influencing its movement and interactions with other atoms in the bond.

What is it called when two substances are mixed and a temperature change occures?

Usually such an experiment is carried out to find the change in enthalpy of the reaction.

What happens when a atom gains an electron?

When an atom gains an electron, it becomes negatively charged and forms an anion. This process is known as reduction, and it can change the chemical properties of the atom by affecting its reactivity and ability to form bonds.

What change to the nucleus when it loses one electron?

Just making sure, first off, that you realize electrons are not in the nucleus. They float in the empty space around the nucleus, of an atom. But if your asking what happens to the atom once it loses an electron, the atom then has a positive charge, and becomes a positive ion. The atomic size[of the atom alone] becomes smaller due to the greater pull the protons are able to have on the electrons.

What change does an atom have if it gains an electron?

If an atom gains an electron, it becomes negatively charged because it now has more negatively charged electrons than positively charged protons. This results in the atom becoming an anion.

If an atom loses or gains an electron?

If an atom loses an electron, it becomes positively charged (cation) due to having more protons than electrons. If an atom gains an electron, it becomes negatively charged (anion) due to having more electrons than protons. This change in charge affects the atom's chemical properties and ability to form bonds.
