If an atom becomes a positive ion, it loses an electron from its farthest electron shell. All metals can form positive ions. It will then form an ionic bond with a non-metal ion which has gained one (or more) electrons from the metal ion. Example: sodium will lose its outermost electron to form a sodium ion, with a one-plus charge (Na+). Chlorine will gain this electron from the sodium, to form a chloride ion with a negative charge (Cl-). Together, they will form an ionic compound: sodium chloride, better known as table salt.
