Rock from the Earth's interior, either volcanoes or granite plutons are the ultimate source of all rocks.

These primal sources are weathered to form sediments, which are in turn metamorphosed, folded into mountains, and weathered again.

However, there are among the continents very ancient cratons, regions which contain materials that date to near the origin of the Solar System!

Zircons from the Jack Hills in Australia have been dated to about 4.4 billion years old. These were probably formed quite close to the period when the Earth's surface first cooled from the magma. (The Hadean age.)

Additional to the above, the Earth itself was formed from a collection of debris from space. This accumulation process continues today in the form of meteoric dist and the occasional meteorite.

Rarely, these meteorites are of economic importance. The Sudbury Crater in Canada is one such , being a largely nickel meteorite (now a valuable ore resource), possibly whose origin was a proto-planet of some kind.
