On average, there are roughly 20,000 - 30,000 recorded earthquakes worldwide every year by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). That's over 55 earthquakes per day so there is an earthquake somewhere every day -- fortunately most of those are very small and often go unnoticed to a person on the surface.

On average only one of those earthquakes is magnitude 8 or higher each year. Worldwide there are on average 15 earthquakes per year with a magnitude 7.0 or higher. As of August 2016, the last major earthquake was magnitude 8.3 near Illapel, Chile (2015-09-16 22:54:32 UTC) . The last 9.0 magnitude quake hit off the coast of Japan on March 11, 2011.
