The Gulf Stream current originates in the lower Caribbean Sea, flows northward along the eastern seaboard of the United States, and then turns eastward towards Great Britain and Ireland. The effect of the warm waters is one reason why the British Isle have a warmer climate than might be expected of countries at their northern latitudes. If you look at a map, you'll see than England is much farther north than, say, Pennsylvania or Virginia.
