Two Mountain Ranges That Take Most of the West Coast's MoistureThe Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevadas.

A more appropriate response to the question might be the Cascades and the Sierra Nevadas. Mount Baker (in Washington), for instance, is believed to have recorded the largest single-season snowfall on record in the world in 1999. I don't believe that most would consider the Rockies to be situated "along the west coast of the US."

The Olympic Mountains in Washington state are responsible for the only rain forest in the United States, which receives an average rainfall of about 200 inches (5 meters) a year. The Cascade Range spans Washington, Oregon, and Northern California, and includes the volcanos Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, Mt. Lassen, and Mt. Shasta. Areas immediately to the east of the Cascades are said to be in the 'rain shadow', and generally receive less than 20 inches (50 cm) of rain (or snow,) a year, while precipitation amounts west of the Cascades average around 80 inches (2 meters) a year.

There are more than two, and they work in combination. The Coast ranges of Washington and Oregon catch a great majority of the rain in that area, as noted above, but Seattle still gets over 60 inches per year. The Cascades get the most of the rest, Eastern Washington and Oregon are deserts except in the higher elevations. Central Valley in California has the same climate, or at least the same native vegetation as eastern Washington, but it is west of the Sierra Nevada range. The sierra's catch most of the rain that would otherwise go to Nevada and Utah, but the coast range is responsible for the dry central valley.

The Olympic Mountains are a short range longitudinally and so Cascade and Sierra Nevada Ranges probably would be considered to get more rain than the Olympics.

How do you find moisture content in sand?

Moisture content in sand can be determined by taking a sample, drying it in an oven, and then weighing it before and after to calculate the difference in weight. The moisture content is expressed as a percentage of the weight of water compared to the dry weight of the sample.

How can you prove that soil contains water?

One way to prove that soil contains water is by conducting a simple soil moisture test. This can be done by taking a handful of soil and squeezing it in your hand. If water drips out or the soil remains moist and clumped together, it indicates the presence of water. Another way is to use a soil moisture meter to measure the moisture content of the soil.

How does mud make things colder?

When mud is applied to objects or surfaces, it absorbs heat from them as it dries, resulting in evaporative cooling. The moisture in the mud evaporates into the air, taking away heat energy from the object or surface and making it feel colder.
