The balloon full of air is basically at room temperature, and this includes the balloon itself and the gas (the air) inside it. When we douse the balloon with liquid nitrogen, it cools the heck out of the air inside, and when we cool air, it's volume decreases. Cool it a lot, and its volume decreases a lot. That's why the balloon shrinks when the liquid nitrogen is poured over it.

Because the nitrogen is so cold, that is basically makes the air in the balloon so cold, that the air is contracted to almost nothing.

Also, the nitrogen contracts the rubber the balloon is made of, making it smaller

The extreme cold of the liquid nitrogen causes the air to cool significantly. This causes the air either to condense or "Shrink", the molecules in the air becoming less energetic, causing them to take up less space. This lowers the pressure inside the balloon to below normal air pressure causing the balloon to shrivel.

What happens to a banana when you put it in liquid nitrogen?

its particles freeze to make it solid

Can liquid nitrogen be put down the drain?

You can put it down the drain, nothing is really stopping you from doing so but you shouldn't put it down the drain. Liquid nitrogen is extremely cold and can have explosive consequences once it sublimates into a gas and could potentially burst your pipes.

Why does the water bottle containing liquid nitrogen explode?

Liquid Nitrogen in a water bottle will explode because of pressure build up. Liquid nitrogen vaporizes rather quickly and when it transitions from liquid to gas, the pressure increases if kept at the same volume. Think of boiling water in a closed container. It is similar to that but liquid nitrogen evaporates at much lower temperature, it will explode at room temperature. Let's say you submerged this water bottle below the boiling point of liquid nitrogen and put liquid nitrogen in the bottle, the bottle will not explode. It is a mechanical explosion (simple transfer of forces) not a chemical explosion like with hydrogen where hydrogen gas ignites.

How do you dispose of liquid nitrogen?

The safest way is to put it in an open space away from people and let it harmlessly boil off into the atmosphere which is 79% nitrogen anyway.

What happens when you add liquid nitrogen to lava?

The liquid nitrogen has enough coldness to completely cool down lava, but also it has the exact same energy to make lava explode. Think of it as pouring liquid nitrogen on your hand, but if you don't put the right amount of heat (helium) and at the right time your your hand will fall off. Think of your hand falling off as explosion.

What happens to a balloon when its put in the fridge?

it will shrink slightly, if you take this to the extreme and use liquid nitrogen it will shrivel up to the size of a golf ball =)

Is liquid nitrogen flamable?

no. In some situations nitrogen is used to put out fires.

Why don't they use liquid nitrogen to put out wildfires?

Because it's dangerous.Because liquid nitrogen is expensive and inconvenient.Because liquid nitrogen will instantly evaporate once it comes close to fire.

How can you maintain sperms in large quantity?

Put semen in liquid nitrogen.

Is nitrogen a suitable gas to put in balloons?

You can feel nitrogen gas in balloons. But there is no advantage of doing so instead of air which contains about 80% (79 % is morecorrect.) and 20 % oxygen in it. Separating nitrogen is expensive and your balloon will not 'fly'. But fall down to ground. If you want it to go up in air 'lighter' gas like hydrogen have to be used. It can be produced from water, economically. So nitrogen is 'not' suitable gas to put in balloon.

Why do balloons get smaller when put in a freezer?

Balloons can be considered a container. containers contain something. A balloon contains CO2, assuming you blew into it. When you put something in a freezer is makes it cooler. making the molecules of CO2 to get closer together making the walls of the balloon to "cave in" making it shrink.

What is side dressing in fertilizer application?

It's when you put down nitrogen (Normally) as a liquid, 28% or 32% nitrogen. This is done with a field cultivator or a center/off-center disk with a injection system to get the liquid nitrogen in the ground.

A balloon is blown up and put into a fridge what will happen to the siz of the balloon?

If the balloon is filled with water, and the water freezes, the balloon will expand and may burst. This is because at temperatures below 4ºC, water begins to expand and as it turns to ice, it has a larger volume than when it was liquid.

How do you frozen plant sample in liquid nitrogen?

put it inside an eppendorf tube and throw in liquid nitrogen. of course it depends what you are planning to do in next step. you can use a mortar and pestle if you want to grind.
