Tornadoes are common in Texas do to a number of factors. Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico meets cool air from northern Canada and dry air from the Rockies. This triggers thunderstorms. Wind shear, which is common over Texas then acts on the storms, setting them rotating, which allows them to produce tornadoes. Additionally there is a layer of warm air called a cap which suppresses storm developing, allowing only the strongest to grow As a result these storms don't have to compete with weaker ones that might otherwise rob them of some of the the warm, moist air that feeds them. The storms are stronger as a result and better able to produce tornadoes.
