Why are diesel prices so much higher than gas and why do the prices fluctuate more when diesels get better mileage?

because it is the leftover oil that we use in cars... Well...., the reason the price is so much higher has to do with the makup of diesel. Untill a few years ago the US allowed more sulfur in our diesel than anyone else in the world. When the US Government decided to lower the allowable sulfur content in diesel, instead of matching the rest of the world, they decided to make it lower than anyone else allows. What that did was remove us from purchasing diesel on the world market since no one makes diesel that meets our new standards. It also required the US refiners to spend a lot of money to retool for the lower standard. Since no one else but the US needs this lower sulfur diesel the market for it is limited to the US. Simple economics. The refiners must make a more expensive to produce product that is only used here. Ergo, high prices.
