Discuss why Mexico has emerged as an important location in the current system of industrial organization?

At first, Mexico was a nonindustrial nation, having only extractive industries on its soil, such as oil, logging or mining operations and providing raw materials to the United States. After the Mexican Economic Miracle (1930-1970) many parts of Mexico became industrialized, supplying not only raw materials to the international markets, but also exporting manufactured goods. Since the late 1980's, Mexico started to export medium to high-tech products such as automobiles and household electronics.

Mexico now acts as a natural bridge between North America (Canada, the United States) and Central and South America. Also, its close proximity to the United States and cheap labor combined allow for the installation of manufacturing industries or maquiladoras along the US-Mexico border, that provide high-tech exports such as consumer electronics (LCD TVs, computers and servers) into the North American markets.
