What were some reasons the soviet union was in such dire economic straits during the later 1980s?

During the late 1980s, the Soviet Union faced dire economic straits due to a combination of inefficiencies in its centrally planned economy, a lack of technological innovation, and a heavy military expenditure that diverted resources from consumer goods and infrastructure. Additionally, the rigidities of state control stifled entrepreneurship and productivity, while the declining oil prices in the mid-1980s significantly reduced the government's revenue. Political reforms under Mikhail Gorbachev, such as glasnost and perestroika, aimed to address these issues but inadvertently destabilized the economy further, leading to shortages and rising public discontent.

These reforms aimed to decentralize the economy, increase transparency in governance, and promote greater openness (glasnost) in society.
