The strategically important highland location along the St. Lawrence River was a locational advantage that contributed to the founding and economic growth of Quebec City. Quebec City is located where the width of the St. Lawrence River changes. An enlarged estuary from the Atlantic Ocean, it becomes a narrower river at the same place where its northern banks are relatively high in elevation. From a military point of view, this site was important. The French built a fort here so that their guns and cannons could control movement up the St. Lawrence River. The French therefore dominated travel from the Atlantic to the interior of North America. The fort attracted settlers and businesses, which, in turn, attracted more settlers and businesses, forming a town, which later grew into a city. Nowadays, the strategic importance is no longer important. However, the city of Quebec remains an important city because of the economic relations that have developed as the number of residents and businesses of the city have grown.
