Virginia was founded for profit. The people who settled there hoped to find gold or silver, but when they arrived they could barely find enough to eat. Many settlers died from starvation, some were killed in fights with the Native Americans, and others were killed by the cold winters. The colony made no profit until John Rolfe discovered that tobacco could be grown in Virginia. Tobacco was the first cash crop grown in the English colonies.

Jamestown was founded in 1607 with 104 men sent to make a profit for the investors who sent them. Tobacco didn't show up until John Rolfe introduced it to the colony in 1610. Without tobacco the colony would have probably failed, but tobacco saved it because demand was so high. Not only was it used as snuff, being smoked, and with pipes but Jamestown used it as currency. It was grown in any space that could be found including the streets.

In 1638, the Dutch colonist Peter Minuet and the New Sweden Company founded the colony of Delaware. It was one of the Middle colonies that was founded for trade and profit.
They were out for profit and to pay back the investors. It wasn't suppose to be a colony.
