"To mint coins was a political act: the image of the ruling emperor appeared on most issues, and coins were a means of showing his image throughout the empire. Also featured were predecessors, empresses, other family members, and heirs apparent. By issuing coins with the image of an heir his legitimacy and future succession was proclaimed and reinforced. Political messages and imperial Propaganda such as proclamations of victory and acknowledgements of loyalty also appeared in certain issues."from Wikipedia.

Many small plots of land owned by small peasant farmers were taken over by the owners of large landed estates (latifundia) who expanded their holdings. This process started at the end the Second Punic War, where Hannibal invaded Italy. The farms of small peasants were either ravaged in the war of had become neglected because of prolonged military service during the war. The owners of the large landed estates took advantage of this to buy land on the cheap. The war also greatly increased the supply of slave labour because the slaves were enslaved war captives. Abundant Slave labour helped to enable the rich landowners to expand their holdings and the expense of the peasants. The landless peasants flocked to Rome and lived in abject poverty because there were not many jobs for them. The process continued during the rest of the period of imperial expansion. Wars and conquests brought prosperity and riches which ended up in the hands of the rich and an abundant supply of slave labour. Most of the slaves were bought by the rich landowners who used them on their latifundia.
