I know that some of the social developments were from the aristocracy. The aristocracy's status was increasingly based on wealth because they were not needed as much after the Hundred Years War because the King was hiring peasants. They wanted luxury goods to increase their status and overseas exploration was a good way to get it. I dont know any other reasons.
