Turkey is not considered an European country by most Europeans - not only the French.

1/ European countries are mainly medium or small-sized. Their relationship between them is that of neighbours, of trade and exchange, sometimes of war, forging a common history. For French, Turkey is not part of that history.

In addition Many European think there exists a common culture between European countries based on Christianity; Turkey is a Muslim country (and a very large one).

2/ Turkey is not located in Europe (except for a small tip), but in the Middle East, like Israel or Lebanon.

3/ Unlike European or Asian migrants, Turkish workers or families have integration difficulties and often do not marry locals or second-generation immigrants, but "import" a Turkish spouse. Hence the lack of local education for children, keeping them from blending into the mainstream society.

4/ the USA support an European membership for Turkey. European politicians are worried that this support is designed to reward an ally in the Middle East, and not for the sake of Europe.
