The European Union began in the 1950s with six countries and was initially only concerned with economics. At that time, it was not a political union; it was called the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). Its purpose was to combine coal and steel industries so as to be more productive and efficient. The original six countries that belonged to it were France, West Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Italy.

The idea of a European Union evolved after World War II. France wanted to intertwine the economies of France and Germany to make another war between the two countries impossible. The European Coal and Steel Community was created by the Treaty of Paris and was signed by not only France and Germany, but by Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands as well. From then on, the European Coal and Steel Community flourished and became a supranational organization, as it transformed into the European Economic Community, which later transformed into the European Union.

How does European citizenship unite Europe?

The European Union does not consist of all of European countries, so European Union citizenship does not unite all of Europe. Even in the European Union countries, each country has its own specific citizenship, as opposed to one single European Union citizenship. You are only a European Union citizen if you are a citizen of one of the European Union countries. There is no European Union citizenship by itself.
