It depends. The flexibility to play two instruments certainly looks good on a transcript to a music school, but is not absolutely necessary. When you reach the college level, you will be split into music education and music performance majors. Education majors will be taught the basics of all instruments (woodwind, brass, percussion, and some strings, dependent on your school), while performance majors are allowed to focus on their preferred instrument, although not required to do so. Both will take basic piano, Music Theory, and aural skills (where you learn to hear and SING pitch both out loud and in your head).
