For very small markets, you may not need a degree... but then, it would be very difficult to move on above that level, and you would be working for little more than minimum wages. A 4-year Bachelor of Journalism degree will get you into most markets. You still may have to 'pay your dues' at smaller stations, but can move up with good performance and a growing list of awards for your work. The University of Missouri School of Journalism is widely acclaimed as one of the best J-schools in the United States. They have a full commercial TV station, a commercial daily newspaper, as well as a radio station. Students do hands-on work in journalism throughout their four years. There are also plenty of intership opportunities in the other commercial radio and television stations in the area. Other excellent journalism programs are found at schools like Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism, Columbia University and the University of Southern California in LA.
