1.8 Kalamazoo Case of 1874
Another historical event that altered the course of education occurred in the latter part
of the nineteenth century in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The "Kalamazoo Case of 1874," as it
is popularly known, established a legal system of taxation for funding secondary education.
As was indicated earlier in this chapter, taxation had been approved over two hundred
years earlier for elementary education in Massachusetts. The decision rendered by the
Michigan Supreme Court in the Kalamazoo Case of 1874 established the same taxing
basis for public high schools as had existed for public elementary schools.8 This now-
famous case inaugurated the concept of funding high schools on an equal basis with elementary schools.
There are plenty of places to stay in Kalamazoo. Most major hotel chains have a presence there, so look for your Ramada and Holiday Inn. Kalamazoo features several independent places as well, like the Stuart Avenue Inn and the Kalamazoo Bed and Breakfast.
