Empire - das Reich Note that the word Reich does not necessarily mean empire. For example, at the time of the Weimar Republic (1919-33) the offical designation of Germany was Deutsches Reich. When writing about the Roman Empire German scholars often refer to das Imperium Romanum.

To date there have been three German Empires. The official title of the first German Empire was Das heilige römische Reich deutscher Nation (Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation). It existed from the 10th Century until it was disbanded in 1806 following its military defeat by Napoleon.

In 814 AD the Frankish Emperor, Karl der Große (Charlemgne) died and his empire, which stretched from Bohemia in the east to the French Atlantic coast, was divided up into 4 kingdoms amongst his grandsons.

The Holy Roman Empire was formed out of the three eastern Kingdoms, which still extended from Bohemia in the East into modern-day France and half of Italy. It was initially called the the Holy Roman Empire, thereby claiming descendency from the ancient Roman Empire. There were two reasons for this:

1. To claim universal dominion over everything

2. Fear that the prophecies of the Prophet Daniel would come true. Daniel prophesied that the world would end with the collapse of the fourth Empire. In antiquity, Rome was thought to be the fourth Empire, so could not be seen to go under for fear that it would bring about Armageddon.

Towards the end of the 15th Century it adopted the title Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.

Following the defeat by Napoleonic France in 1806, the Empire disintegrated into city states and kingdoms.

In the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71, the second empire was proclaimed in the Mirror Room at Versailles, France. It was simply known as das deutsche Reich -the German Empire. It lasted until 1918 when, after losing the Great War, The Kaiser was forced to abdicate.

The third German empire is the most famous, for all the wrong reasons. Known officially as das deutsche Reich - the German Empire, from 1933 to 1943 and das großdeutsche Reich - the Greater German Empire, from 1943 to 1945, or simply das dritte Reich - the third Empire. Proclaimed by Adolf Hitler that it would last 1000 years, it survived barely 12.
