Helium
In 1905, scientists at the University of Kansas were examining samples of gas taken from a well in Dexter, KS. The gas in this well contained 72% Nitrogen which rendered it nonflammable. However, they also discovered the presence of Helium which until then was thought to only be present in the Sun and in a trace mineral known as cleveite.
