The term 'Brit' is an abbreviation for British. The word 'British' comes into the English language from the ancient, classical Latin language of the conquering Romans. The Romans traveled from Italy, across continental Europe, and into modern-day Great Britain. In fact, they're responsible for the name of the country and of the people. Indeed, the Romans called the country Britannia, and the inhabitants Britanni. They offered as additional adjectival ways of saying 'British' Britannicus and Britannus.
