The most effective communication occurs in person, face-to-face. There is as much or more information to be gleaned from nonverbal communication than there is from what someone says or writes. Without nonverbal cues, it is very easy to misinterpret someone's intention. Tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language are critical to effective communication. Everything else is a compromise.
