before this it wasn't considered slavery. they were indentured servants in Virginia, but that's like slavery from my perspective.
even prior to this the Spanish used slavery after the encomienda system started to flunk out in modern day central and south America, so they replaced the system with African American slavery. I'm not sure the exact year though.
They didn't join, they started the transatlantic slave trade...

Captain John Hawkins started the British slave trade in 1562. It came to America in 1619. The British got out of the slave trade in 1807.

Slave trade was caused by the fact of black slaves were very cheap to purchase and they can produce a lot of money. They made a lot of profit, that's why the slave trade started.
The most historically significant triangular trade was the transatlantic slave trade which operated between Europe, Africa and the Americas from the 16th to 19th centuries.
