Fort Duquesne was built by the French in the 1750s during the French and Indian War. The fort was named after Marquis Michel de Duquesne, the Governor-General of New France. It served as a strategic military outpost until it was captured by British forces in 1758, who subsequently renamed it Fort Pitt.
