You can, of course, buy a replacement key at the Volkswagen Dealer. But you can also search for an after market replacement key online. Just type in 'replacement key' for your year model and you'll be on your way. Buying online will save you 60-70% over the dealer and often the sites will provide instructions on programming the wireless part yourself. You'll have to pay to get the actual key cut - probably by a premium locksmith or a dealer for 30-40 bucks. All-in-all, you should be able to get this done for about $100 online.
you have to pop off the back of the remote. i had to get someone at a dealership to do it. you know nothing is simple on a vw...
HI, how program the new remote control for passat vw

You normally do not have to reprogram the key when you replace the battery. If you do you will have to contact your VW dealer.
Any VW dealer can program it for you. There isn't a way to do it yourself, unfortunately. or try this (much cheaper than VW rip-off) Switch Ignition on with old key - leave key in the ignition. Lock drivers door using new key. Press the unlock button once on new key. Horn will sound once. Wait 6 seconds - press the unlock button once more to activate coding procedure. The remote control should now be programmed.

There is nothing to reset. Just change the battery and if you have it in correctly it will work.
To reset the alarm on a VW Cabrio, first ensure the vehicle is unlocked using the key or remote. Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position without starting the engine. Press the lock button on the remote or the door lock switch to deactivate the alarm. Finally, turn the ignition off and remove the key, which should reset the alarm system.
Take the key to a VW parts dealer and have them cut you a new key... It is probably just too warn out to recognize the key in the door... I don't know if your talking bout the key itself or the button but if it's the buttons, get a new battery

The only way to program the key it to take it to a dealer. They change about $100
