no, zener diode regulators can supply no more than a few tens of milliamperes to a load while maintaining stable regulation. a 7805 three terminal linear regulator IC is designed to provide up to 1 ampere to a load while maintaining stable regulation.

Note: three terminal linear regulators like the 7805 already contain an internal zener diode acting as a voltage reference, but its internal load is only 1 or 2 milliamperes to keep it very stable.

Does a zener diode acts as a switch?

A zener diode cannot be used as switch.

What is the difference between p n junction and zener diode?

The difference between the pn-junction diode and the zener diode is that the pn-junction diode is used for rectification while the zener diode is used for rectification and stabilization. Also, the zener diode can function in the breakdown region while the pn-juntion diode can not function in that regime.

Is it pn junction diode used as voltage regulator?

zener diode

Will a zener diode work the same as a germanium diode?

No. An ordinary diode, be it silicon or germanium, conducts in one direction only, whereas a zener diode conducts in both directions, but at different voltages. An ordinary diode is used to rectify, using its forward bias characteristics, while a zener diode is used to regulate, using its reverse bias characteristics.

When current through a zener diode increases by a factor of 2 by what factor does the voltage across the zener diode increase?

If the zener diode is in zener breakdown the voltage across the zener diode remains constant regardless of current (for the ideal zener diode). Real zener diodes have parasitic resistance that causes the voltage across the zener diode to increase slightly with increased current, but due to temperature dependant variations in this parasitic resistance as well as temperature dependant variations in the zener breakdown voltage, this change in voltage in real zener diodes cannot be described by a simple linear factor.

Can zener diode used as rectifier?

Yes **************************************** Yes they can but there are pitfalls. A normal diode will have a high reverse breakdown voltage. A zener has a relatively low breakdown voltage (its "zener"voltage). If a zener diode is used as a rectifier it must have a zener voltage at least twice the peak of the applied a.c.

What is the purpose of the zener diode in a power supply?

to limit the voltage or regulate the same.

Reverse bias

What type of current is used in zener diode?

A zener diode passes drect current, and the point of a zener diode is that the voltage across it stays nearly constant over a range of different currents, so it can provide a supply of stabilised voltage.
