A 3way switch at each location is what you use, but it must be wired properly to work. You must have incoming power at one switch location and no power at the other location. The other location has the wire going up to the light. You then need a 3 conducted wire such as 12/3 or 14/3 running between the switches. Use the same size wire you used to power the switch and top up to the light. You then connect the black power wire at one location to the black screw on the switch, and at the other location you connect the black wire going to the light to the black screw on that switch. At each location tie the whites together under a wire nut and shove that back in the box. Tie the grounds together and connect that to the ground screw at each switch. At each location you will now have the black and red wire from the wire you ran between the switches left. Those are called travelers. Connect those wires to the remaining 2 screws left on the switches at each location. Does not mater which you connect to which screw. Assuming no other wires are involved this is how you wire it.

Is there a way to wire a 3 way household dimmer switch as a 2 way dimmer switch?

You need a three way switch to control lights from two locations. The name is misleading. Three way switch refers to the connection points on the switch. You can use a three way switch as a single switch as long as you place hot wire on the brass screw and the use any of the other screws for the return hot.

How did a 'three-way switch' get its name?

"How does a single pole switch differ from a three way?" is a trick question often asked to catch-out new trainee electricians because the common but mis-named "three-way switch" is actually a single pole, double throw switch, i.e. it is only a 2-way switch, not a 3-way switch.A pair of "3-terminal, single pole, double throw" switches are often used to hook-up two separate light switches to control one light or one set of lights.A proper "3-way switch" would be capable of being switched to 3 different positions and could have one, two or more poles. Each pole could be either single- or double-throw.The same answer put in a different wayDespite the fact that the name "3-way switch" is often used to describe it, if it is of the type that has just one pole that can only be physically switched 2 ways, the name "3-way switch" is quite wrong for that particular switch. A "3-terminal, single pole, double throw" switch" is a more accurate description for it.Comment'Three-way switch' -American term. 'Two-way switch' -UK term for the same type of switch. Used to operate a lamp from two different locations.

How do you control 4 light in one switch and the same lights control by 4 switches?

You want four switches to independently turn 4 lights on and off. You need two 3-way switches, and two 4-way switches. The first 3-way is located where the power first comes into this system, two travelers (wires) go to the first 4-way switch, two travelers then go from that switch to the other 4-way switch and two wires go to the final 3 way switch. The third wire on the last 3 way switch then goes to the first light fixture. This is a complicated wiring project and it is not as simple as it sounds. Realistically, you will have more than 2 wires traveling between switches depending on whether the neutral is located, and further more dependent on whether power from the panel first comes to a switch or to a light fixture. You need to plan this well or you may have more wires in one or more boxes than code allows. Also, wires must be attached in particular positions on all the switches, or you will end up with a situation where some of the switches will work and some won't and troubleshooting is very complex.

What is a two way lever switch?

In electrical terminology it is known as a single pole double throw switch.

How do you install a dimmer switch for multi fixtures where the original switch has 2 black wires and one red with no green?

This simple if you have two switches controlling a set of light you will need to buy a three way switch. A three way switch will have a place for three connection. Depending on what brand of switch you purchase the directions will be sightly different but most dimmer come with detailed directions and diagrams. When you by a dimmer you need to read what kind of load it is meant to control. They are built to control incandescent light, magnet low voltage lights or electronic lights.

Where can a circuit with two lamps with single pole switch fluorescent lamp with two 2 way and an intermediate control can be used?

This type of circuit would never be used. The two way fluorescent system would depend on the voltage being supplied by the two lamp circuit switch. If the switch turns off the two lamp circuit the rest of the circuit with the fluorescent fixture would become inoperable.

What type of switch is installed to control a luminaire from two different control points?

A Three-way switch. 3-ways are used to control from two locations. As opposed to a Four-way switch, which is needed to control from more than two locations.

How can I control a single light with two switches?

You can control a single light with two switches by using a three-way switch setup. This involves connecting the light fixture to two three-way switches, allowing you to turn the light on or off from either switch.

How does a 3-way switch control the light in the middle of two switches?

A 3-way switch controls a light in the middle of two switches by allowing you to turn the light on or off from either switch, regardless of the position of the other switch. This setup creates a circuit where the switches work together to control the flow of electricity to the light.

Where is switch for reversing lights on a 99 ranger?

On the drivers side of the trans case, mid way twords the top. It's a screw-in switch with a two wire connector- one to the fuse the other to the lamps.

What is a 3-way switch used for in electrical wiring?

A 3-way switch is used in electrical wiring to control a light fixture from two different locations. It allows you to turn the light on or off from either switch, providing convenience and flexibility in lighting control.

What is the purpose of a switch in a lighting circuit, specifically when it comes to controlling the flow of electricity, and how does it differ from a 3-way switch?

The purpose of a switch in a lighting circuit is to control the flow of electricity to turn the lights on or off. A regular switch has two positions - on and off. A 3-way switch, on the other hand, allows control of a light fixture from two different locations, such as at the top and bottom of a staircase.

How can you tell if the switch that you have is a 3 way or not?

You can tell if a switch is a 3-way switch by looking at how many terminals it has. A 3-way switch will have three terminals, including a common terminal and two traveler terminals. It is designed to control a light fixture from two separate locations.

What is a three-way switch and how does it function in a typical electrical circuit?

A three-way switch is a type of electrical switch that is used to control a light or other electrical device from two different locations. It has three terminals and allows the circuit to be turned on or off from either switch. In a typical electrical circuit, the three-way switch works by allowing the flow of electricity to be redirected between the two switches, depending on their positions, to control the connected device.

Can a 4 way switch be used in place of a 3 way switch?

No a 3-way is a single pole double throw. A four way switch swaps travelers.

How do you run a 3-way switch in a circuit?

To run a 3-way switch in a circuit, you need two 3-way switches and one 4-way switch. Connect the power source to the common terminal of the first 3-way switch. Then, connect the travelers from the first switch to the travelers on the second switch. Finally, connect the common terminal of the second switch to the light fixture. This setup allows you to control the light from two different locations.
