Fuses and breakers
It's when a failure of one circuit leads to another circuit to fail. This can be intentional,for protection purpose, or it may not be intentional. Cascade tripping is common in sequenced circuit.
Devices used to open an electrical circuit are called OCPD's. (overcurrent protection devices) The most common are circuit breakers and fuses. In commercial motor starters they often employ another OCPD called a "heater" (UK thermal fuse) which is a metal strip which melts like the element in a small fuse when too much current (amps) go through it. They devices are in the circuit primarily to protect the wiring and devices they power. Circuit breakers such as in your home panel do protect you from a "shorted" circuit. Another safety and most common in residences are GFCI's or ground fault circuit interrupters (UK ELCB, Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker or RCD, Residual Current Detector) which come as both a receptacle (female plug) or as a circuit breaker.

Up to 12 on a 20 amp circuit. Up to 9 on a 15 amp circuit. But use common sense. If the circuit will be heavily loaded, as in a home office, then do not install that many.

The most common types are the regular type, where the only over current protection is provided by the breaker panel. the other most common type is the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) This type has a built in "circuit breaker" so when it senses a fault in the circuit it trips-this type is the safest as they are more sensitive than circuit breakers in the breaker panel.See related links below.
A fuse (old technology), a circuit breaker, a ground fault interrupter (GFI), and a surge protector designed to shunt surges such as lightning strikes to ground. GFI outlets are required when located near plumbing. Whole house surge protectors are available and, even though expensive, can keep a lightning strike from frying a houseful of electronics.
