Simply stated, there are fewer transmission losses using high voltage, so the large power lines run at high voltage, but for home use, high voltage would be dangerous and would require considerably more insulation, so it is stepped down to about 115V RMS (root mean square average) for home use. Fewer people get killed and fewer houses burn down that way.
