Q: What is the difference between 'Open Loop' and 'Closed Loop'? A: When the engine is first started, and rpm is above 400 rpm, the system goes into 'Open Loop' operation. In 'Open Loop', the ECM will ignore the signal from the Oxygen (O2) sensor and calculate the air/fuel ratio based on inputs from the coolant and MAF sensors, but mostly from a pre-programmed table in the memcal. The system will stay in 'Open Loop' until the following conditions are met: 1. The O2 sensor has varying voltage output, showing that it is hot enough to operate properly. (This depends on temperature)

2. The coolant sensor is above a specified temperature about 40oC/104oF.

3. A specific amount of time has elapsed after starting the engine. The specific values for the above conditions vary with different engines and are stored in the mem-cal. When these conditions are met, the system goes into 'Closed Loop' operation. In 'Closed Loop', the ECM will calculate the air/fuel ratio (injector on-time) based on the various sensors but mainly the O2 sensor. This allows the air/fuel ratio to stay very close to 14.7:1.

In control system theory:

  • An open loop system has no automatic feedback, the operator(s) set parameters they want and monitor the response of the system manually. This is like driving a car without Cruise Control, you press the accelerator and watch the speedometer and continuously manually change your pressure on the accelerator. Another example would be a home heating system controlled by just a switch on the wall. It is either full on or full off and you have to keep running back and forth flipping the switch to keep the temperature comfortable.
  • A closed loop system has automatic feedback (usually negative feedback), the operator(s) set "set points" they want then the control system takes over and does it automatically. This is like driving a car with Cruise Control, once you are at the desired speed you press the "set" button and the car holds that speed automatically. Another example would be a thermostatically controlled home heating system, just set the temperature you want and it stays there automatically.

Basically open loop systems are those which provide an output depending on how they are expected to work irrespective of the changes that occur in the output due to some disturbances whereas closed loop control systems are those whose output is checked with the desired result and system parameters are varied in order that the output is as per the requirement.

For Example: In old Air conditioning system, the systems used to work at certain interval without observing the room temperature. But in modern Air Conditioning System, the system senses the room temperature by using temperature sensor,if temperature exceeds certain limit then only the system starts cooling. So, old systems are example of open loop control and new systems are example of closed loop control.

Open Loop control Systems have input, then the input is processed by various components like amplifiers, filters etc, then final out stage.

The main difference between open loop and closed loop systems is that in open loop systems there is no feedback.

Explain open-loop transfer function of a close system?

An open loop transfer function is the transfer function of a system without incorporating the feedback component. For example, where the closed loop transfer function with unity feedback H(s) = G(s)/(1+G(s)) it can be deduced that the open loop transfer function is Y(s)/U(s) = G(s).
