The "Burning Tree Mastodon" was discovered in 1989 near Hebron, Ohio, in Licking County, while dredging a Golf course pond which also happened to be a pre-historic bog. The mastodon was found missing a rear leg but otherwise fully intact- including stomach bacteria which was suspended by the bog chemistry and was the oldest known living organism at that time. There were stone tool cutting marks on the mastodon bones which remained, but there was no evidence that humans killed the mastodon- only that they butchered part of it. Humans hunted mastodon in Ohio so it is certainly possible humans killed it. It was likely preserved intentionally in the bog but the owners never returned to claim the rest of the meat.
