As an electrician, the circuit would be tested for voltage before starting any work. All people that deal with electricity for a living have testers. For people that are weekend electricians it should be suggested that they also buy one for their own protection.

What is the reading if a circuit has broke?

By broke, do you mean it has no money?...Or do you mean it is defective(Broken!)? If the latter, there is no way of answering the question, because the nature of the circuit topology is unknown, defect is unknown, and the test instrument is unknown.

What is the purpose of a rheostat in the determination of an unknown resistor?

A rheostat can be used to vary the resistance in a circuit until a balance condition is reached, allowing for the determination of the unknown resistor value through adjusting the resistance of the rheostat until the circuit is balanced. This process is often used in bridge circuits for precise resistance measurements.

What type of circuit would be used in lighting circuit?

A lighting circuit would be a parallel circuit.

Why a wheatstone circuit is called a bridge?

An electrical circuit used to measure an unknown electrical resistance is called a Wheatstone bridge. It is called a bridge because it balances two legs of a bridge circuit.

When someone does a home run in baseball how do you say it in French?

a home run is translated 'circuit' or 'coup de circuit' in Canadian French. In France the game is unknown and the few French who know about baseball rules would probably use the American terms like 'home run'.

What is the resistance in this circuit?

You would have to specify the circuit.

If a circuit had a gap in it would it work?

Nope... if the circuit has a gap in it - the path of electrons is interrupted, and that would stop the circuit from working.

Why is a voltmeter not placed inside the circuit?

The voltmeter is connected parallel to the circuit in order to measure the voltage drop across that circuit or sub-circuit. If you were to connect the volmeter series to the circuit, since it is a high impedance device, it would represent an effective open-circuit condition. You would see the voltage available to the circuit, but the circuit would not receive its intended current and it would not function. Contrast this with the ammeter, which you do place series to the circuit in order to measure the current flow through the circuit.
