yes civil engg. is one of the optional subjects in ias................
IAS is one of the services getting recruited through civil services examination(CSE) conduct by UPSC. Everybody who qualified finally at CSE get foundation training usually of 3 months at Lal Bahadur Shastry National Academy of Administration(LBSNAA),Mussoorie. After this training, trainess of all other cadres like IPS,IRS etc sent for their respective training institute like for IPS- SVP Police Academy, Hyderabad etc. But IAS trainees continue at LBSNAA till one year. In the next year of training which is actually on job training they go for their respective cadres(States or UT) and continue for one year. So in total IAS get training for 2 years, 1st year at LBSNAA and 2nd year on Job. As soon as they finish it they probabtion also get over. i think it is foolishness to take civil engg as optional in ias. how can u score well solving numerical problems of structural engg , som ,rcc, steel structure etc. paper 2 is ok but paper 1 is at high risk. but i think if u plan well ,u may be d first to clear it. nothing is impossible.

Unlike the engineering streams like Mechanical, Civil or electrical, Computer science is not an optional subject. Hence, the best optional choice would be Sociology and Public Admin, reason being, sociology is easy to connect with, as it talks about us and Public Admin is all about your job once you are selected and hence useful.
