An AND circuit is a circuit that takes two or more inputs, and generates an output that is the boolean AND function of those inputs. Two light switches in series, for instance, is an AND circuit because both switches have to be on for the light to be on. If the switches were wired in parallel to each other, and then in series with the light, that would be an OR circuit.

An AND gate performs a logical AND operation on binary data. AND gates have 2 or more inputs and one output. The output of an AND gate is a logic 1 only if all of the inputs are a logic 1. If any of the inputs are a logic 0, the output of the AND gate is a logic 0.
A 2-input AND gate has the following truth table.
X = input 1
Y = input 2
Z = output
X Y Z
0 0 0
0 1 0
1 0 0
1 1 1
A 2-input AND gate would be used when the circuit designer wants the output of a gate with two inputs to conform to the truth table above.
