Thomas Edison promoted it extensively but did not invent it. In America, the techniques of Reinforced Concrete were greatly improved over the earlier French pioneers by Earnest L. Ransome. His system created the first large skyscraper of 15 stories, the Ingalls Building in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1903. Edison later partnered with Ransome to expand and explore its potential.

Earlier, it is Joseph Monier getting the first patents in France for what will become the building medium, Reinforced Concrete in 1867. Monier was actually building on techniques that were first developed for other purposes by Joseph Louis Lambot as early as 1848. It is believed that in fact, Lambot recieved the first patents, possibly in Belgium, and he exhibited a reinforced concrete rowboat in Paris in 1855. Monier, a gardener in charge of the Orange trees at the Palace of Versailles may have seen Lambot's boat and used the techniques to make outdoor pots and large planters, getting the first patents for them in France in 1867. Monier continued to expand these patents for other stuctural use.
