Jig will guide the tool toward the work piece but donot hold the work piece. Jig will be placed on the work piece. Whereas the fixture holds the work piece and work piece is clamped to the fixture.
Its not practical because the welding jig is used to hold the materials in place under stress and heat. When testing that the product is assempled correctly it is always better to use a test jig that way you make sure that when the item is removed from the welding jig it will fit in to a jig that represents it final fitting area. If the weld jig is or goes wrong you wont find out until the customer comes back to tell you and then its a very costly job correcting and keeping the customer happy

Metal expands as it is heated and contracts as it cools. Keeping the heat input even, completely around the pipe, will help. If possible reheating the weld area after the weld is complete can help to "stress relieve" the joint. Using a weld "fixture" to prevent bending is another possibility.
