R-Y-B is a British standard designation, similar to A-B-C in the Americas.

Answer

The letters, R-Y-B, stand for 'red-yellow-blue', which were the standard colours used to identify the line (not 'phase') conductors of a three-phase power supply in the United Kingdom until the introduction of the EU standard, 'brown-black-grey'. The obvious drawback with the EU colour code is that the corresponding letters, 'B-B-G', are not much use for labelling line conductors in schematic diagrams!

In practise, the colours red-yellow-blue continue to be used throughout the British transmission and distribution system, whereas the colours brown-black-grey are now mandatory for low-voltage installations such as residences, etc.

The letter sequence, R-Y-B, corresponds to the normal phase sequence for a three-phase system.

What is the difference between three phase load and phase supply?

How much current equipments are drawing from three phases (combined or individual) is called three phase load and how much supply we are getting from source is called three phase supply. Ex. In INDIA single phase supply is 220 volt ac with neutral. So in three phase supply all RYB phases should be 220 volts ac with neutral individually. If we calculate with phase to phase than it shoulb be 415 volts ac.

Why the number of phases are limited only to three why not five or six?

How do you know Ryb phases when color coding is not there?

First of all, the colours red, yellow, and blue, are applied to LINES not to phases! To determine which line is which, you must compare them with lines that are identified. This process is known as 'phasing out', and is difficult to explain without using a diagram. I suggest you check out 'phasing out' on the internet.
