Ashoka was anointed the new emperor or ruler of the Mauryan Empire in 274 BCE. His grandfather, Chandragupta, had set out to conquer the weaker surrounding kingdoms to expand the territory of his people in 324 BCE, and was the first to rule over a unified India. Ashoka's father, Bindusara, established a reign much the same as his father's, controlling a larger kingdom than ever before known. When Bindusara became gravely ill, Ashoka succeeded him, although one hundred of his other brothers were mysteriously murdered. Many historians believe Ashoka had his own brothers eliminated so that he could succeed his father.
A Sudden Change of HeartAshoka's reign as emperor began with a series of wars and bloodshed, culminating in the Kalinga War of 260 BC. The mammoth loss of life and suffering witnessed on the battlefield made him turn away from war. He subsequently became deeply influenced by Buddhism, and adopted the dharma, which consists of basic virtuous teachings that can be practiced by all men regardless of social origins. "Dharma" is derived from the Sanskrit word for "duty".
He renounced the violence that had characterized his early life and initial rule, adopting a peaceful system of rule dedicated to the welfare of his people and the spread of Buddhism.

When a character changes throughout the story is called a dynamic character and when a character does not change throughout the story is called static character. In Macbeth , Macbeth starts out as a good honorable guy and then he changes to a completely different person. He starts killing people so he could become king. Macbeth's wife could be considered a static character. Since the beginning she seems to be selfish, evil and power hungry.
Dynamic characters change through the course of a story, while static characters remain the same. Ebenezer Scrooge is an excellent example of a dynamic character.
A static or flat character is one that does not undergo a significant change or growth throughout the story. These characters typically maintain their personality traits, beliefs, and behaviors from start to finish without experiencing any transformation.
A static character is one whose personality, beliefs, and attitudes remain consistent and do not undergo significant change throughout the story. These characters often provide stability and serve as points of reference for the dynamic characters who experience growth and development.
