A baster...I am and proud. Firstly, my forefathers accepted the name Baster, thus when I grew up, to say you are a Baster was and still is exactly the same as the name of any other ethnic group/people in Namibia. The word Baster in Namibia are not anymore connected to the meaning of a child being born out of wedlock/before marriage, it is seen as just another ethnic group. I am also a Baster due to history made many years ago. When the coloured people in South Africa struggled to get a homeland, which so many other non white ethnic groups had, 90 families decided...enough is enough, they pack their bags and left the Cape area looking for a homeland. They crossed the orange river and bought land from the Nama people at the place called Rehoboth and we are still there. Forget about the original meaning of the word baster, just realize that there is a ethnic group in the world that are called Basters...very proud people we are and will always be.
