The two major classifications of literature are poetry and prose. Poetry - (from the Greek 'poiesis' a making: a forming, creating, or the art of poetry, or a poem) is a form of literary art in which language is used for its aesthetic and evocative qualities in addition to, or in lieu of, its apparent meaning. Poetry may be written independently, as discrete poems; or, may occur in conjunction with other arts, as in poetic drama, hymns, lyrics, or prose poetry. Prose - is the most typical form of written language, applying ordinary grammatical structure and natural flow of speech rather than rhythmic structure (as in traditional poetry). While there are critical debates on the construction of prose, its simplicity and loosely defined structure has led to its adoption for the majority of spoken dialogue, factual discourse as well as topical and fictional writing. It is commonly used, for example, in literature, newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias, broadcasting, film, history, philosophy, law and many other forms of communication.

The adjective 'literary' has several meanings...1. Identifiable as occupied or concerned with books or written works. For example, famous author Mark Twain once wrote a story entitled "My Debut as a Literary Person".2. Well informed about literature. University professors who specialise in English literature would definitely be literary people.3. 'Literary' is also used to define a word or term that is mainly used in 'literature'. For example, the word 'motif' is used as a literary term to describe a recurring theme in a story or play.4. The term 'literary' can also be used in a negative way to describe a person who is more interested in 'books' than in 'real life'.For more information, see Related links below.

There have been, and will be so many different literary criticisms regarding what defines a comic/comics. Like many forms of art and literature, the definition of comics will generally depend a lot on personal reflection. For me, many comics have the characteristics of: 1. The depiction of the passing of time and/or sequence 2. The combination of text and imagery 3. Simplified imagery that allows the reader to relate easily 4. Multiple paneled images Whether or not you consider things such as single panel "comics" comics is where the idea of personal definition comes into play.
