There are two suggestions about the word's origin. Both refer to the fact that there was once a company named J. Furphy operating in Shepparton, Victoria, Australia, delivering water in carts.

During World War One in Egypt, there were water carts bearing the name Furphy, and, according to a writer of that time, the drivers of these carts used to spread rumors.

Mr Furphy himself turned to writing, using the nom de plume "Tom Collins", which in those days was slang for a rumor.
