What is one epic convention in The Odyssey?

An epic can be defined as a long narrative poem with a serious topic centered around a heroic figure. Epic conventions are characteristics found in all epics. The goddess Athena's intervention is most apparent in this epic. The last epic convention to be discussed is the cataloging included by Homer. Athena is the one who goes to tell Telemakhos to return home. Conventions range from heroic exploits to divine interventions to historical information. She is the one who disguises Odysseus when he does return home. Odysseus survives the journey to the Underworld and gathers knowledge needed to regain his home. Homer makes great use of flashbacks to divulge his tale to the listener or reader. When he entered the town of the Phaikians, she appeared as a small girl child to lead him to the king and queen's manor. Taking the form of mortals, she leads Odysseus through foreign and home lands in safety. His dead mother tells him that he has no need to worry because Penelope is still waiting patiently on him. Another convention evidenced in The Odyssey is its beginning in medias res or in the middle.
