My sources say that the term comes from a 16th century English Ballad/story called "Babes in the Wood" or "Children in the Wood". Nasty tale about a greedy uncle who goes to some dastardly lengths to keep his brother's children from inheriting from their father. In short- he lures them into the wood, to their doom. The uncle does not live happily ever after, either.

These events came to pass when he was but a babe. (slang) An attractive person, especially a woman. She's a real babe! (also babes (singular)) Darling (term of endearment). He got the nickname soon after he signed with minor-league Baltimore Orioles at the age of 19 -- at the time, legally a minor. His story is that his fellow players considered him a "babe in the woods" for his naivete; others say he was the team owner's "babe" because of Ruth's young age. The nickname stuck.
The bonus puzzle solution was A Babe in the Woods.
