it depends on how you use it in a sentence. you could use the first one. for example, you could say "these apples grew on trees" and in a different way simmilar to the second, "this apple was grown on a tree." Each is correct; it depends on what you want to say. It is about your intent, and not about sentences. For example, you could say "In that warm, moist forest, moss grew on trees, and covered them like green on envy." Or you could say "Most fruits are grown on trees". Grew is active, and 'are grown' is passive. It seems to me that the active voice is more descriptive of the natural process of growth, and the passive voice indicates that the apples are produced intentionally, for a purpose. It is hard to describe this purposeful production with anything other than the passive voice. "Are produced" is passive. If you take the moss example and change it to: "In that warm, moist forest, moss was grown on trees.." doesn't that strongly suggest that people grow the moss, and harvest it for some reason? There is an active agent 'growing' the moss, and the moss is essentially a passive recipient of the process.
