You use "I" when you (the speaker) are the subject of the verb. Use "me" in all other constructions except possessive ("my," "mine").

You are the subect of the verb whenever you are doing the action of the verb: when you are the one who's moving, talking, thinking, being, liking, etc., you say "I." Otherwise, it's "me."

I go to school.

When I study, I like to listen to music.

I like blue.

What should I wear?

I am going to be late.

I have three sisters.

I have bought some cookies.

These cookies are for me.

These cookies are for you and me.

Give them to me.

Give me the cookies. They're mine.

Share them with me but don't take them away from me.

You gave me too many.

Divide them between her and me. She and I will share them.

I bought them just for me. They are my cookies.

Let me have them.

Be very careful when I or ME is part of a compound phrase. If you're not sure which one to use, try leaving out the other parts of the compound phrase and see if the sentence sounds correct.

For example, is the sentence "My dad spoke with he and I" written correctly? Here, "he and I" is the compound, so try the same sentence with only one of the two words: Both "My dad spoke to I" and "My dad spoke to he" make no sense grammatically, so the correct wording must be "My dad spoke to him and me."

"I" is a subject pronoun and normally goes before the verb (e.g., I speak.) "Me" is an object pronoun and goes after the verb or after a preposition (e.g., Wait for me.) Sometimes I can go after the verb in a question using the verb "be" (e.g., Am I late?)

Some people can become confused about using "I" or "me" when more than one person is involved. Perhaps you are wondering if "John and I" or "John and me" is the correct form.

To make sure the pronoun you are using is correct first say the sentence without the other name. For example: "John and I are going bowling." So first say the sentence without John, "I am going bowling." (Are changed to am because the subject is now singular) It doesn't make sense to say "Me am going bowling." as the pronoun is before the verb and should be "I" instead. Accordingly, you know that "I" is the correct term to use. Of course there will be sentences where me is the correct pronoun.

For example, you might say 'John came bowling with Jack and me'. You'd say, 'John came bowling with me'rather than 'John came bowling with I', so you know that in this kind of example, 'Jack and me' is correct, while 'Jack and I', would be wrong.

I is used as the subject of a verb. In all other cases use me. Between you and ME; My father gave this to my brother and ME; If you have any questions, see Ms Jones or ME ( not myself no, no, never myself- that's almost as bad as saying I).

The word "I" is a subject pronoun-- it refers to the person who is doing (or performing) the action in a sentence, and it's first person singular: I am writing this answer. The word "me" is an object pronoun-- it refers to the person who receives the action, and it's first person singular: Give the book to me. Note: The word "me" is often the object of a preposition: to me, with me, for me. The word "I" cannot ever be the object of a preposition-- you cannot say "with I" or "to I." So... if you see the phrase "between you and I," it is not good English, because "between" is a preposition and it must have an object-- "between you and me."
