Which were the first artistic representations created by humans?

Some of the earliest artistic expressions were beads and pendants

to adorn the body. Some 30.000 years ago these were found in many places

in Europe and even in Australia.

Around this time attempts were made to make statuettes and carvings

of animals and other elements of nature. For this people used stone, bone,

antlers or horn. Numerous small statues of women point to the worship

of a mother goddess.

Some 10.000 years later there appear the first painted and engraved images.

The famous cave paintings of Lascaux, France and Altamira, Spain are more

than 20.000 years old. Subjects are usually deer, wild horses and bovine animals.

Birds and fish are depicted rarely and humans almost never.

It is believed that such pictures were meant to bring good luck in the hunt.
