This is a plural and singular problem.

You don't use...

I WERE...

You use

I WAS...

"I" is singular that is pointing to one person, yourself. So if its singular, you use was and if its plural, you use were.

ANS2:Past tense (Indicative mood) of "to be"

I was

You were

he, she, it was

We were

You (all) were

They were

Past tense (Subjunctive mood) of "to be"

If I were

If you were

If he, she, it were

If we were

If you (all) were

If they were

Note: "You and I were" because "You and I" = "We"

It is for singular an plural:

I was here yesterday (singular).

They were here yesterday (plural).
