Britain was once an imperial power that established colonies in many places around the world. Even after they left white English-speaking people were often the dominant members of the societies formed from some of these colonies. In other cases, such as India, English became the common language for peoples in the same country who did not speak a common indigenous language. The fact that United States has taken over as the world's superpower, and that it's de facto official language is English, has given the people of other countries even more incentive to learn the language.
